The work of Montreal choreographer Virginie Brunelle is infused with a rigorous and relentless physical vocabulary. Inspired by the power of rhythm that she learned playing violin in her childhood, she approaches each of her dance creations with a deep dive into musical research that then guides and inspires her creative process. The success of her first work in 2008 propelled her career, earning her numerous awards and honours for her original choreographic aesthetic.

In Fables, Brunelle sensitively observes and examines the chaos of an era in turmoil by creating an evocative universe from which emerge larger-than-life characters —contemporary feminine archetypes freed from invisible, yet very real barriers. Bodies collide and bounce between amplified breaths and cries. Ten dancers are carried away by the music of composer and musicians Philippe Brault, performed live by pianist and composer Laurier Rajotte, creating a series of tableaux that portray a powerful gut-punch of a world that echoes an aching need for hope and humanity.
